Do Cruise Ships Dock In Anchorage: A Port Guide
Alaska cruises offer travelers the chance to explore one of America’s most spectacular frontiers. Many passengers pass through Anchorage, the state’s largest city, as part of an Alaska itinerary.
Do cruise ships dock in the Port of Anchorage? The short answer: rarely. The city lacks proper cruise facilities and sits inland, away from the coast. However, a limited number of ships do make the journey and we sailed on one of them.
In 2026, only seven vessels are scheduled to dock in Anchorage, owned by Holland America, Seabourn, and The World cruise ship. The latter, with residences at sea, will dock for three days.

If you’re booked on one of these cruises, here’s what to expect, how to reach downtown, and where to book a rental car.
Anchorage Cruise Port Overview
Anchorage’s port facilities can accommodate some cruise ships, usually smaller in size. Anchorage is a working freight port. Cargo comes first, so cruise ship space is limited. For this and other reasons, most cruise vessels dock in Whittier or coastal port of Seward.
Anchorage’s port sits just north of downtown and provides direct access to the city center for passengers who dock there.
Overview Of Anchorage’s Port Facilities
The port lacks dedicated cruise terminals with specialized passenger amenities found at purpose-built facilities. When we disembarked at Anchorage, there was no welcome building with a visitor center, shops, bathrooms, or dining options.
Instead, we formed a line outside, waiting to board a shuttle. The security in the port was strict and limited what photos we could take between the ship and the bus.
With no welcome center, there are no vendors selling excursions here or downtown. So have a plan for the day before arriving.

Holland America Line schedules select vessels to visit the port, and we sailed on one of them, Nieuw Amsterdam. The arrival and departure was very picturesque, with a backdrop of snow-capped mountains.
How The Port Differs From Whittier And Seward
Large modern cruise ships face significant obstacles docking in Anchorage due to the port’s inland location. Ships must pass Seward and sail through the Cook Inlet to reach Anchorage, located on Knik Arm.
The facility cannot accommodate the size and draft requirements of most contemporary cruise vessels due to its shallow waters. Docking in this city usually requires a schedule that aligns with high tide.
By docking in Anchorage, we enjoyed a full day of exploration without the added transportation from an alternative port. Do note that no passengers start or end their cruise voyage in the Port of Anchorage. Anchorage is a port day on a larger itinerary.

Anchorage vs. Whittier vs. Seward
Whittier and Seward serve as the primary cruise ports for passengers wanting to access Anchorage. Both ports offer deepwater docking facilities and transportation connections to Alaska’s largest city. Seward and Whittier are embarkation or disembarkation ports, Anchoarge is a port of call.
Whittier: Key Access Point to Anchorage
Whittier operates as the closest cruise port to Anchorage, situated about 60 miles south of the city. The port sits at the head of Passage Canal and provides direct rail and road connections to Anchorage. In fact, the McKinley Explorer offers direct rail service to Denali from Whittier.
Princess Cruises and Holland America Line frequently use Whittier as an embarkation and disembarkation point. The port handles one-way Gulf of Alaska cruises that begin or end in Anchorage.
Transportation between Whittier and Anchorage takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours by road. The scenic drive passes through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel. It’s the longest highway tunnel in North America, shared by trains and vehicle traffic.

Seward: Popular Cruise Gateway
Seward is twice the distance from Anchorage on the Kenai Peninsula. Recent renovations by Royal Caribbean International mean the Seward Cruise Ship Terminal can accommodate mega vessels and connect directly to the Alaska Railroad.
Multiple cruise lines dock at Seward’s deepwater pier facility. The port offers easy access to Kenai Fjords National Park and downtown Seward attractions.

Travel time from Seward to Anchorage ranges from 2.5 to 3 hours by road. The Alaska Railroad provides a popular scenic route between the two cities, taking approximately 4 hours.
Shuttle Service For Cruise Passengers
When docking in Anchorage, major cruise lines provide complimentary shuttle bus service from the Port of Anchorage to downtown. Since the port is primarily commercial, passengers are not permitted to walk within the port area, take a taxi, or use rideshare services.
These free shuttles operate regularly throughout the day when ships are docked. Our shuttle dropped us at the William A. Egan Civic and Convention Center, which is within walking distance of many downtown attractions. The shuttle ride takes about 10-15 minutes.
Keep your eyes on the landscape during the ride, as we spotted moose on the side of the highway before reaching downtown.
Since all cruise passengers must use the shuttles, we suggest disembarking as soon as possible. Our ship arrived early, so we disembarked immediately and were able to reach town before our scheduled arrival time.

Complimentary shuttle information:
- Frequency: Every 15 minutes.
- Duration: 10-15 minutes.
- Drop-off: Typically at the Egan Convention Center, located at 555 W 5th Ave.
Return shuttles to the port run on similar schedules. It’s important to note, passengers CANNOT return to their ship by taxi or rideshare.
Pro Tip: Disembark early to beat shuttle crowds and maximize your Anchorage day trip.
Renting A Car In Anchorage
We found the Anchorage cruise excursions limited and expensive. Since it wasn’t my first time in the city, we rented a car instead. Most car rentals are at the airport, a USD 25 taxi ride from downtown.
Enterprise (5th Avenue) and Alaskan Car Rentals (6th Avenue) have offices downtown and are a short taxi ride away. We rented through Turo and arranged to pick up and drop off our rental near the Convention Center.

For those new to Turo, the car rental service is like Airbnb. Car owners rent out their vehicles, and the selection varies in price depending on availability, make, model, and year of the car.
We needed WiFi to communicate with our host when we arrived and received instructions on the pickup location and where to find the car keys. Some hosts offer kids’ car seats, coolers, and other accessories for an extra fee. Do note the return time, which may differ from your port day duration.
Experiencing Anchorage
Anchorage offers diverse experiences from world-class museums showcasing Alaskan art and native cultures to outdoor adventures in Chugach State Park.
The city offers access to glacier tours, wildlife viewing, and scenic drives, making a car rental particularly helpful.
Cultural Attractions In Anchorage
The Anchorage Museum is the city’s premier cultural destination. The museum, located 8 minutes from the Convention Center, showcases a mix of modern and traditional Alaskan art, as well as interactive exhibits linked to the Smithsonian Research Center.

The Fur Rondy Dog Mushing Hall of Fame is on 4th Avenue. Located in the Anchorage Mushing District, wall murals and plaques relive the history of Alaska’s native sport of dog mushing.
Anchorage’s Alaska Native Heritage Center provides authentic cultural experiences through live performances of traditional dances and storytelling. Artists demonstrate native crafts while films showcase Alaska’s diverse cultures.
We visited the Alaska Native Heritage Center and explored six authentic native dwellings. While the center offers free transportation during the summer, we visited early in the season when it wasn’t available, and the center was operating on a limited winter schedule.
However, it didn’t diminish our overall experience.
Outdoor Adventures Near Anchorage
Chugach State Park offers hiking opportunities at Flattop Mountain. The challenging 3-mile round trip to the summit features a 1,252-foot elevation gain with a scramble section near the top.

An easier quarter-mile loop trail provides scenic views for less experienced hikers. The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail spans 11 miles along Anchorage’s coastline, perfect for cycling, walking, or rollerblading.
Pablo’s Bicycle Rentals and Trek Bike Rentals, both on L Street, have regular, tandem, and electric bikes. Consider the ride out to Earthquake Park and beyond.
Ship Creek provides convenient salmon fishing within the city limits. King salmon runs occur from early June through mid-July, while silver salmon run from late July through late October.
The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC) houses rescued animals, including moose, bears, and caribou, in natural habitat enclosures. Located 79 miles from Anchorage, the drive took a little over an hour.

The drive is incredibly picturesque with forest on one side and views of Turnagain Arm on the other. Visiting the AWCC was our primary reason for renting a car. Our rental car and admission saved us USD 550 over a cruise line excursion.
While I had visited the center previously, it was on an organized tour. By exploring on our own, we spent several hours there before returning to Anchorage. The highlight for us was seeing the newborn wood bison, one just hours old.

Anchorage Cruise Port Summary
Few travelers choose an Alaska cruise for Anchorage itself, and we didn’t either. Still, docking there offers a bonus—easy access to the city’s attractions and nearby outdoor adventures.
Whether you rent a car as we did or take an organized tour, be sure to eat at 49th State Brewing. Located downtown, it’s one of our favorite places to eat in Anchorage. We recommend the yak burger with their locally brewed Solstice IPA.
