Talkeetna is a charming small town with a quaint atmosphere. We recommend it for those seeking a more relaxed, laid-back experience. On clear days, guests staying there can enjoy excellent views of Denali (formerly Mount McKinley).

We stayed at Holland America’s McKinley Chalet Resort to gain quicker access to the park’s entrance and visitor center. It’s the ideal location for those who prioritize outdoor adventures and wildlife viewing. We used a complimentary shuttle service between the hotel and the park.
Staying in Denali is best for:
- Adventurers who want to do extensive hiking.
- Visitors keen on seeing the “Big Five” – caribou, moose, Dall sheep, wolves, and bears.

The park has a shuttle bus system for getting around. This is often the best way to see wildlife and explore deeper into the park. The extended Tundra Wilderness Tour is a must, with lots of opportunities to see larger animals.
Renting a car can be useful for accessing areas outside the park, but private vehicles can only drive the first 15 miles inside Denali National Park itself.

Taking The Train
The Alaska Railroad offers a picturesque train ride from Talkeetna to Denali or vice versa. The Denali Star train departs Talkeetna at 11:20 am and arrives in Denali Park at 3:40 pm. The reserve itinerary has a departure time of 12:30 pm and arrives at 4:40 pm.

My experience on Holland America’s McKinley Explorer exceeded my expectations. The seats were comfortable, and I liked that I could go outside to take photos during the ride.

Traveling by road is best for those who don’t want to be bound by a set rail or bus schedule.
By Rail

Having done the journey by rail, it’s a must to exerience at least once. While it rained through most of my train trip, the views were still picturesque. Having a guide on our rail car who narrated the trip made it all the more spectacular.

The Susitna River flows between Talkeetna and Denali and is known for its stunning landscapes and rich biodiversity. Even in June, snow still gathered along its water’s edge, signaling the area was still emerging from winter.
As the train follows the Susitna River, there are numerous opportunities to see Mt. Denali if the weather is favorable.
The highlight of all train journeys between Denali and Talkeetna is Hurricane Gulch. The stunning natural feature is a deep canyon carved by the roaring waters of the Hurricane River. A 914-foot bridge provides the best vistas.
On the train’s monitor, I saw that we were nearing the Gulch, so I went outside to capture some photos. It’s the best place for viewing.
Our train slowed as it passed over the canyon. It allowed us to see its lush landscapes, towering cliffs, and the ever-present backdrop of the majestic Denali mountain range. Even in the rain, the views were breathtaking.
